Building Hardwick

Branding / Literature / Signage / Interior Graphics

Hardwick Hall is one of the National Trust’s jewel properties, an Elizabethan masterpiece begun by Bess of Hardwick in the 16th century and developed, extended and embellished in the centuries since.

Recognising that countless people – from Countesses to cooks – had contributed to the story of Hardwick Hall we created the theme of ‘Made to inspire, by a cast of thousands’ and employed this idea to bring the past and its characters to life.

The story’s cast of characters are portrayed as an eclectic cast of many, in a mixed-media montage, that takes a journey through four centuries of styles and personalities – some real and others imagined.

A major part of the development was the creation of a purpose-built Visitor Reception centre. Taking inspiration from the famous hall tapestries, we created layers of fabric banners printed with maps, characters and places to discover around the estate; developed a comprehensive family of way finding signage and new suite of visitor information leaflets. Our designs ensure that Hardwick is not left unspoilt by progress but lovingly improved by it.
